A tricky situation has developed for the Rays, but in a very good way. Top-ranked pitching prospect David Price has been competing for a fifth spot in the rotation this spring. Were he to make the team, the Rays would be forced to trade away a bullpen pitcher in order to make room for Price on the team. Seems like a good tradeoff to me: the bullpen pitcher is one of two long-relievers, and is expendable.
The other scenario is that Price is sent back to the minors, since he still has an option left. He would most likely begin the season in Triple A, and be brought up later in the year. This seems like the best thing that the Rays can do: start out by giving Price some time in Triple A, where he can develop his skills even more, and build his confidence against talent that is not as good as the MLB teams he would face.
